How to Make Agua de Jamaica: A Refreshing Mexican Hibiscus Tea

What is Agua de Jamaica?

Ingredients

  • 2 cups crushed or 4 cups large flowers of dried hibiscus flowers (Jamaica)
  • 10 cups water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup of stevia (optional)
  • Juice of 1 lime (optional)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • Ice cubes
  • Fresh mint or lime slices for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Hibiscus Flowers:
    • Rinse the dried hibiscus flowers under cold water to remove any dust or impurities.
  2. Boil the Flowers:
    • In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil. Add the rinsed hibiscus flowers and cinnamon sticks to the boiling water.
    • Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes until the flowers have softened and the water has turned a deep red color.
  3. Strain and Dilute:
    • Fill your serving container to the top with ice.
    • Remove the pot from heat and strain the hibiscus flowers using a fine mesh sieve, over the ice.
    • Straining over the ice will chill and dilute the tea at the same time.
  4. Sweeten tea:
    • Add your preferred sweetener and mix well.
    • If you like, you can also add the juice of one lime to enhance the flavor.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve your Agua de Jamaica over ice cubes. Your drink may need to be diluted depending on how long you left your flowers steep.
    • Garnish with fresh mint or lime slices if desired.
